REFLECTIONS ON A DECADE OF TRAVELING THE SBA ROAD
WITH GREAT SBA LENDERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY …
Ten years in one place in our industry doesn’t happen often these days. I am happy to say my decade with J.R. Bruno & Associates has been an amazing ride – and is still going strong. I’m privileged to have seen an evolving SBA and to continue working with some of the most dedicated SBA lenders in the country.
I joined JRB in April 2008, coming in from the client side, after managing SBA lending department operations at several financial institutions. Coincidentally, my 10-year anniversary coincides with JRB’s 24th. J.R. Bruno & Associates has served the SBA and business lending community since April 1994. Together, we’ve seen a lot of changes and much growth in the economy, the business lending environment, and the SBA.
Happily, this past decade brought streamlined SOPs, winnowing them down from an average of over 800 pages to somewhere north of 400 pages. To some of you 400 pages might still feel like a lot, but for we who had the 800-page versions in our desk binders, the new versions are very much welcome. From my point of view, the streamlined SOPs provide clarity and direction where previous versions came with confusion and head scratching.
The 2008 economic crash led to many bumps in the road. As a result, my knowledge of Workouts & Liquidations grew by leaps and bounds and this area is now one of my specialties at JRB. During this time we watched some banking giants fall but also saw some real lending innovation rise from the ashes.
New forms, new processing programs, new SOP’s, new website … SBA is an ever-changing program that provides me with a job that’s always interesting and challenging. And definitely never boring!
What I enjoy most is the opportunity to share with others what I’ve learned in my 20+ years of SBA lending experience. I’m on the road a lot and enjoy getting to know our SBA client lenders one-on-one as we work on their portfolios and address any issues. Helping lenders strengthen their programs, manage their portfolios, save their guarantees, and train the next generation of SBA lenders is a job worth doing.
So, thanks to all of you who allow me to do what I love every day. Here’s to our next decade!
